14 West Lancaster Avenue Ardmore, PA 19003 484-401-0709 www.democratslmn.org Ellen Abraham Friday, September 03, 2010, 6:00 - 10:00 PM Comics were the mainstay of Ellen Abraham's childhood. She incessantly drew and copied from the pages of her comic books and Mad magazines until she became an adolescent and “graduated” to political cartoons. Her interest in history and politics led her to leave art school and to teach social studies for a number of years. She eventually returned to a career in art and obtained her MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Ellen's paintings are a hybrid of the figurative and the abstract. The satire, humor and cartoon imagery of her youthful artwork began to evolve as she grew more familiar with Cubism, German Expressionism, Abstract Expressionism and American Social Realism. Ellen feels a great affinity with artists such as George Gross, Otto Dix and Archibald Motley who also painted scenes of daily life in their own tumultuous time. Ellen is quite serious about being silly. Her goal is to create good art that is sown from the depths of comic outrageousness, satirical observation and mild misanthropy. If Matisse had the “sun in his belly," Ellen has a banana peel permanently attached to her shoe. |

Life has many moments, and I like capturing them with my camera. I am a self-taught photographer who began taking little photos in conjunction with grass roots activism. Some people look as a scene in front of them and just see people, a street, flowers, critters, or an old house. I look at the same scene and see stories and possibilities. |

822 West Lancaster Avenue Bryn Mawr, PA 19010 610-527-0690 www.milkboycoffee.com Jana Bailey Friday, September 03, 2010, 5:30-7:00 pm Paintings by Jana Bailey Opening Reception, 9/3/10. Inspired by Abstract Expressionists such as Rothko and Motherwell, Bailey uses color as language. Yet, while color is hugely important to her, she also practices using the subtle complexities of white. By incorporating sculptural aspects, such as fabric or elements from nature, she draws the viewer to consider the 3D environment created on her paintings' surfaces. Bailey received her BFA from Arcadia in '09 and is now pursuing her MFA at PAFA. |
